How Can Chiropractic Help with Sports Injuries?

Whether you have runner injures such as hamstrings strain, or a footballer pulls a groin as the athlete kicks in the same way he has kicked it many times before, the running or the kicking may not be that caused of the injury, it is the load that we are not adequately prepared. Addressing the underlying cause is the key to proper recovery and preventing future incidents. Whether it is a undetected spine or joint pain, or years of poor posture, the resulting injury could the end of a career in sport.

Whether you are an weekend warrior or a professional athlete, your body is prone to the some kind of injuries over time. Repeated movement can lead to a slight loss of proper movement in the bones of your spine and joints, which can interfere with the healthy working of the muscles. You may have ignored the pain, carried on with the sport for too long without treatment. Now find yourself with a chronic injury.

  • Calf and Hamstring strains

  • Tight and Groin sprains

  • Neck pain

  • Shoulder injuries

  • Sciatica

  • Achilles tendonitis

  • Lower back pain

  • Tennis elbow/Golfers'elbow

  • Tendonitis/ tendinosis

These injuries are often recurring and may shorten promising sporting careers and turn enthusiastic amateurs into inactive individuals.

Problems with performance

Injury is not the only cause for sports enthusiasts or professionals. Poor biomechanics could be an underlying cause, and however hard athlete work and however hard training they put in is not practical. That is why so many athletes consult chiropractors who will work to improve both function and health. Dr. Gilak is interested in sports-related injuries and is a certified Active Release Technique practitioner; using Functional Assessment is a great tool to help figure out poor biomechanics.

Advantages of working with a Chiropractor

Chiropractors can enhance your performance and help prevent future problems as well as speeding up recovery from injury.

Unlike painkilling medication, chiropractic gets behind the cause of the injury rather than just treating the injury itself. Your chiropractor will carry out a complete examination (including x-rays or MRI if it is necessary) and ask you questions about your sport life, posture, medical history, and lifestyle to figure out the cause of your poor performances and make a proper diagnosis.

Then your treatment will begin, often with biomechanical evaluation, functional assessment, followed up by soft tissue therapy, and gentle, specific adjustments done by hand to free the restricted joints and remove spinal joint dysfunction. This is an effective drug-free treatment which is generally painless, although you may feel some short-term soreness around the injured area. Treatment will typically be followed by an individualized rehabilitation plan aiming to strengthen the injured area, improve flexibility and prevent future exacerbation.

Chiropractic treatments aim to restore normal joint function and increase your control, coordination, and muscle strength.

Like most athletes who have benefited from chiropractic care, you may decide to return for regular check-ups to keep your body working at its best. Regardless of your age, condition, or health, chiropractic care may improve your athletic potential.

Chiropractic Functional Assessment

What makes me different than your average visit to other  Newport Beach chiropractic offices is that I apply various tests including functional assessment and joint biomechanics assessments to figure out what is the cause of the pain and discomfort.

One size fits all or, the classic three times aweek for 6 months is not how I treat my patients in Newport Beach. Treatment strategies is based upon individual conditions, needs and how their body respond to care. If appropriate, referral to  MD and collaborating with various doctors in Newport Beach and surrounding cities is part the plan.

Assessing joint movements pattern by assessing the muscle strength and weakness is part of our strategies. Patient self reported history is crucial part of the assessments, so I spend about an hour for the first visit to evaluated the situation properly and throughly.

What is Functional assessment?

We assess your muscles to determine which muscles are overactive and which ones are underperforming. By addressing the muscles we are able to:

  • Diagnosing and alleviating the true cause of the pain

  • Decreases the frequency of chiropractic visits

  •  Breaking and correcting the harmful movement pattern

This tool is used to screen and uses joint ranges of motion to identify movement limitations, Isolated muscle strength testing for neurological assessment and limb asymmetries; in addtion integration component testing includes balance, trunk stability endurances, certain task related testing to assess how joints overall respond to loading, and assessing coordination during seven selected movement patterns  that is standard for FMS Screening. As the individula completes each of the movements, the practitioner rates the athlete from zero to three. The sum of these scores is then used to identify the  Faulty functional movement of the athlete.
